You take a stunning, razor-sharp 4K photo of a landscape on your phone. You send it to your family group chat on WhatsApp. But when they open it, the photo looks muddy, pixelated, and completely ruined.
By default, WhatsApp aggressively compresses every image you send to save server bandwidth. It will take a beautiful 12MB photo and squash it down to 90KB. If you want to send photos that look professional, you must bypass the standard gallery picker.
The “Document Trick” (The 100% Quality Method)
If you send an image as a “Photo,” WhatsApp compresses it. But if you send that exact same image as a “Document,” WhatsApp assumes it’s an important file (like a PDF) and refuses to compress it. It sends the original, raw, full-resolution file.
How to do it on Android:
- Open the chat with your contact.
- Tap the paperclip icon (attachment button) at the bottom.
- Do not tap Gallery. Instead, tap Document.
- Tap Browse other docs at the top.
- Use the top menu to filter by Images.
- Select your high-resolution photos and hit Send.
How to do it on iPhone (iOS):
Apple makes this slightly more complicated because photos are kept entirely separate from the Files app.
- First, open your iPhone Photos app.
- Select the photo you want to send, tap the Share button, and choose Save to Files.
- Now, open WhatsApp and go to your chat.
- Tap the + icon next to the text box.
- Tap Document.
- Select the photo you just saved in the Files app and send it.
The New “HD Quality” Button
If the Document trick is too annoying, WhatsApp recently added a built-in “HD” button. It’s not 100% uncompressed like the Document trick, but it’s drastically better than the default setting.
- Tap the paperclip (or +) icon and select Gallery.
- Select the photo you want to send.
- Before hitting the send arrow, look at the top of the screen. You will see an HD icon.
- Tap it, and change the setting from “Standard quality” to HD quality.
- Hit Send. The receiver will see a small “HD” watermark in the corner of the photo.
FAQ
Why can’t I see the HD button on my photos?
WhatsApp’s algorithm analyzes the photo before showing the HD button. If the original photo you took is already low resolution (like a heavily cropped meme or a screenshot), WhatsApp will hide the HD button because the image doesn’t qualify for high-definition enhancement.
