How to Recover Deleted Photos from Android Without Root

You accidentally tapped “Delete” on a photo you desperately needed to keep. Panic sets in. You search the Google Play Store for recovery apps, but they all demand “Root Access” to deep-scan your internal storage.

Rooting your phone voids the warranty and can break banking apps. Fortunately, you don’t need root to get your photos back. Here are the three methods I use to recover deleted photos safely.

Method 1: Check the Trash Bins (The Obvious Step)

Before doing anything complex, remember that almost every modern Android gallery app has a built-in recycle bin that holds photos for 30 to 60 days.

  1. Google Photos: Open the app, tap Library at the bottom right, then tap Trash at the top. Select your photos and hit Restore.
  2. Samsung Gallery: Open the app, tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) at the bottom right, and select Trash.
  3. Files by Google: Open the app, tap the hamburger menu at the top left, and select Trash.

Method 2: Use DiskDigger (No Root Required)

If you permanently deleted the files from the trash bin, you need a recovery app. DiskDigger is the only app I trust for this, and it has a “Basic Scan” mode that works without root.

  1. Download DiskDigger photo recovery from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app and tap Start basic photo scan.
  3. Give it permission to access your files.
  4. The app will scan the device cache and thumbnails folder. It will pull up lower-resolution versions of your deleted photos.
  5. Check the boxes next to the photos you want, tap Recover, and save them to a local folder or email them to yourself.

Note: Without root, DiskDigger can only recover the cached thumbnail versions of your photos, not the full-resolution originals. But a slightly blurry photo is better than no photo at all.

Method 3: Check Hidden App Folders (WhatsApp/Telegram)

If the deleted photo was sent to you via a messaging app, a duplicate copy likely still exists deep in your file system, even if you deleted it from your main gallery.

  1. Open your file manager app.
  2. Navigate to Internal Storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Images.
  3. Check both the main folder and the Sent folder inside it.
  4. For Telegram, check Internal Storage > Telegram > Telegram Images.

FAQ

Can I plug my phone into my PC and use Recuva?

No. Modern Android phones use the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) connection standard, not USB Mass Storage. PC recovery software like Recuva cannot scan MTP devices as they don’t get assigned a drive letter (like D: or E:).
